Death-in-bathtub nursery sealed (the star online - 14th June 2011)
GEORGE TOWN: The nursery where a two-year-old drowned in a bathtub has been sealed after being ordered to cease operations, said state Welfare Department director Zulkifli Ismail.
“The nursery in Paya Terubong was not registered with the department as it failed to meet a number of requirements such as teacher and student ratio among others.
“The operator had also failed to convert the land status from residential to commercial,” he said after sealing the premises yesterday.
Zulkifli said the closure was the first such case in the state, adding that he would also send officers to monitor the centre daily to ensure that it stays closed.
On June 6, Stella Chew Xing Rou was found drowned in a tub in a bathroom at about 1pm.
Zulkifli urged parents to send their children to daycare centres and nurseries which are registered with the department to ensure their safety.
“Our website (http://jkm.penang.gov.my/images/stories/senarai_TASKA__berdaftarNEW.pdf) has a list of registered centres.”
Admin Comment: A day care should not have this kind of mistake. Parents live their children to be care. This is a very big lesson to all parents to make sure the day care / nanny / baby sitter that take care of your children are practicing the safety environment.
