Every mother are aware of placenta previa. Even in early pregnancy- as soon as the pregnancy is detected, the doctor will scan mother's womb and check for the placenta position. Most mothers also know that placenta at lower part of uterine could be fatal if no precautions are taken into action during whole stage of pregnancy. But, how many of us ever heard of cord presentation and cord prolaps? Many also do not aware that cord prolaps is a rare obstetric emergency. It happen between 0.14 to 0.62 percent of pregnancy.
It was happening to me. I was on my labour process, the v.e was 4cm already, contraction became intense, but the baby's head wasn't engage. The doctor who did the v.e was checking again, maybe try not to make me scare, he ask me, "Where is your husband. I need to talk to him." Then he went out with out waiting my answer. He called him. I was confuse. I think, I can be transfered to labour room soon, that's why he call my husband. Then, I went down from the treatment bed, standing next to it.
When the doctor came in, he said, "Why you get down? Did I ask you? Please lay on the bed back, we wait for your husband and I'll explain to you later."
My heart was pounding fast. I was puzzled. Why? What was happening actually? Later, my husband arrive.
"I checked and I think your wife can't deliver normally. Possibility for emergency Caesar. When I try to check the servical opening, I think I touched the umbilical cord. This is a very unusual case, very rare. We call it cord-presentation, luckily the membrane is not rupture yet even though she already have leaking. But we have to wait for confirmation from Specialist. She will do the scanning to confirm this matter."
After a while, the speacialist did an ultrasound scan and she confirmed- footling breech with cord presentation. I was about to be sent for emergency LSCS.
While the nurses were making preparation- changed me to operation gown, give cover cap, and many more - the specialist doctor told me about the risk. "It is too risky to deliver normally. If the placenta abrupt too early, and your baby still cannot be deliver, maybe it could be fatal for him for lack of oxigen. And if the placenta abrupt too long, baby still not coming out, then you might have bleeding and it is dangerous to you too." I didn't know it could be this serious. An hour ago, I was having my tea break and took shower right after that, just before I felt the unbearable contraction.
"If you feel pain, please bite this blanket. Don't push at all. Please. We don't want you to break the membrane." she added, when she look I was in a great pain.
"Nurses please hurry up. What are you waiting for, if she deliver here, then we will be in a lot of trouble."
" We are waiting for attendant," a nurse say.
"No need. Bring her with any stretcher we have," the specialist said firmly. Then, I was sent to operation theater. And we arrived on time.
Thank God, both of us save.
My baby was admitted to paedeatric ward after delivered - grunting and leaking liquor more than 24 hours.
I, however having some complication after was sent back to ward- uterine atony with post partum haemorrhage (pph). But for now, I'm not going to talk about that yet. Read my experience of having uterine atony and pph here.
